WA Bink Frayne A Class Trophy

Bink Frayne MemorialThe 2016 Bink Frayne Memorial Regatta for A Class boats was sailed at Jackadder Lake on Saturday March 12. There were 10 skippers entered, but unfortunately, Roger managed to forget to put his rudder back in after arriving home from the Nationals.

The wind was a gentle 5 to 10 knot south-westerly which was fairly gusty and inevitably had plenty of shifts and downdrafts. The fleet contained three Swords, the former National Champion A1 design of Hub Bell’s and the Wombat of Graeme Howie, making it a strong, high quality fleet.

Consistency was the order of the day once again. Glenn managed to finish inside the top three in all races, and that proved to be the difference on the afternoon. Jeff Green pushed hard and made Glenn work for his victory. At times, Hub’s A1 showed plenty of speed as well, although that was mostly when the breeze was up a bit.

Graeme’s Wombat was hard to beat when the wind lightened off, whilst Denton showed that his performance at the Nationals was no flash in the pan. Denton showed terrific speed at times, but suffered with a few problems on the day.

Mark Shepherd, Rod Moss, Ian Sherriff and Lenny White all sailed well, and had plenty of close racing. The smaller sails of the boats found it hard going in the mid-A rig wind range, but well done for battling on through the afternoon.

Skippers sailed the regatta in good spirits, and generally the sailing was clean. The racing was close with the fleet crossing the finish line in rapid succession on many occasions.

It was fantastic to have Margie Frayne and her daughter Sass come down to the lake for the presentations. Margie and Sass bought down some nibbles and a few bottles of champers. We took a moment to remember Bink, and remind ourselves of his friendship, and the fun we had together. It was great to drink a toast to Binky.
