SA 2018 10R State Title - 8th September
After a grey winter in Adelaide, the skippers and race officials enjoyed a pleasant spring day for the SA 2018 10R State Title. Brilliant sunshine and a moderate NW breeze persisted all day at Tiranna Way, West Lakes.
This event was brought forward to coincide with the Bournville Trophy, a one-day ranking event for RM skippers, to entice more interstate skippers to come to Adelaide for a full weekend of sailing. It worked: there were 4 interstate yachts and 9 local yachts on the line at the start of the first heat.
Throughout the day there were minor changes in wind strength and direction. Most skippers kept using their A rigs, although a few changed down to B rigs for some afternoon heats. Two early withdrawals and minor damage to other yachts from time to time meant there were between 9 and 11 starters in most heats.
The positioning of windward marks had to be fine-tuned on a couple of occasions as the breeze shifted slightly towards the West, but 18 heats were run before the 3 pm deadline (and welcome relief from staring into the sun’s reflection).
The final three placegetters shared the honours as heat winners at various times, but when the points were totalled it was Andrew Reid who was victorious. Congratulations Andrew. Scott Mitchell and Kirwan Robb took out the minor placings.
Many thanks to the interstate skippers who supported this event. It was great for the local skippers and spectators to witness some world class competitors in action at West Lakes.
Thanks also go to Alan Bessell (PRO), Trevor Jeffree (Scorer), and Brian Walsh and Jeff Watson (boat crew), who were all kept reasonably busy throughout the day.
