QLD IOM Championship - 28/29th October

IMG 8028

The State of Queensland International One Meter Championships have been sailed and won in perfect conditions in the Gladstone Marina last weekend.

The predicted 7-12 knot north to northeasterlies arrived at the exact start time allowing PRO Ian Ashe to set a perfect course close to the skippers and with uninterrupted and unrestricted winds. Skippers were impressed with the elevated vantage of their yachts and the constant breeze, prompting many to suggest the Gladstone location as one of the best places to sail in Queensland. Skippers from the Wynnum/Manly, Springfield Lakes, Kawana, Brisbane, Moreton, Fraser Coast and north to Mackay joined the Gladstone contingent to make a disappointing but strong 16 boat competition.

 Report on the Newport Classic

The Newport Classic IOM Regatta attracted 26 entrants from 8 clubs from Central QLD to Northern NSW.  The Moreton Radio Yacht Squadron revived the event after a few years’ hiatus and the response exceeded the expectations. Recent improvements in the local facilities, including landscaping of the foreshore, cafe’ coffee shop, serviced toilets and a floating pontoon, deemed the location too good not to share with the Radio Sailing community.

S/QLD 10R Class Championship - 13th August

9 boats sailed in the 10R championship today. The event was hosted by the Brisbane Radio Yacht Club and held at their Eagleby venue.

Winds were very light and variable and only 2 races were sailed before lunch time was called. The first 2 races were won by Greg Torpy with Frank Russell not far behind. A total of 12 races were sailed for the day. After lunch, the conditions were not much better and Ian Ashe was finding it difficult to set a course. The wind direction was changing and at least 2 races had down wind finishes, which confused a few of the spectators, (and competitors)

The 2 top placegetters managed to share 1st place 9 times so you were doing very well if you could keep up with Greg and Frank. No major mishaps except one sailor managed to hit the last buoy head on and managed to dismast himself in the process.
